Should we make registering mandatory to read the forums? I'd venture a guess that the majority of those are search page spiders but who knows....

I've noticed the same thing on several ocassions but wouldn't want to force registration just to view...I believe the legit folks would like the opportunity to view the goods before taking the plunge.

Those are mostly likely script kiddies attempting various exploits against the server.  They use the HTTP/1.1 method (usually) but since they're normally scripts, they just exit when the exploit fails.  But they leave the sessions open.  Bulletin boards are very common targets for this type of activity because of a lot of recent vulnerabilities in MANY bbs systems.

Most often, these kiddies/scripts are attempting to spam the BBS with porn/virus/worm links etc...  They don't care if they're sucessful or not, they just blast posting attempts hoping one will stick.

If you're requiring membership to post, that'll take care of the issue for the most part.  I like the idea of guests/read members/post.
